Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)

The RBA became statutory in schools in September 2021. It is an activity based assessment of pupils' starting points in language, communication and literacy and mathematics.

Schools are required to carry out the assessment within the first 6 weeks of a child starting reception. No numerical score is shared and the data is used at the end of Year 6 to form the school-level progress measure. Teachers will receive a series of short, narrative statements that describe how the child performed in the assessment. These statements will be shared with parents and carers at the first parent's evening.
